I discovered this Supporting People programme video on YouTube.com.
While it is bannered Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council Social
Services and contains their contact details, the information is not
wholly Blackburn-centric. It is more of a wide ranging overview of
Supporting People for the general… Continue

Are you open to learning?

For those of us who enjoy continuous learning
and everything free, there is OpenLearn which
is a happy amalgam of the two. This free service
is open to absolutely anyone.

You register and you can then view study materials
for Open University courses. There is also a
LabSpace section where you are invited to reuse
and remix open education resources.

OpenLearn does not:

New training courses added to SPOCC Events Calendar

The SPOCC Events Calendar at ye olde SPOCC Online Community has had a load of new SPOCC courses added to it from July to December 2008.

The course training dates are available at the OCC Support site.

Thinking about SPOCC Social

To get a better grasp of what SPOCC Social is about, a
particular distinction may shed some light: the difference
between the web and Web 2.0. Surfing the web involves
passive observation - TV without the scheduling. The
latter is all about active UGC (user generated content).

This concept is brilliantly illustrated by Kathy Sierra
of the Creating Passionate Users blog in her topic The
Best Thing About

John,

Debbie Bruce of Greenwich asked me, "How are you targeting other SPOCC users about this? Can I forward as and when to SPOCC users who contact me?"

I replied to her with your statement, "We've decided to make everybody we know in our LAs to be SPOCC Users to start with and to subscribe them to e-mail notifications for the forums (we checked this with the LAs). They can work out how to unsubscribe if they want to!"

How does that work in practice? Do people have to register on the home page, or do they already have pre-registered accounts (usernames/passwords)?

John,

Luke has done a nice job setting up SPOCC Social. I'm waiting to hear about a web editor role I've applied for. But if I can help in any way, I would be tickled to help kickstart this site. Have you thought about a Terms of Service? The old one for the SOC could be shortened and modified somewhat. ToS's are important in that they minimize the liability of the affiliated company, while giving members a sense of what they can and can't do on the site.

Is it alright for me to contact Luke occasionally through SPOCC Social?

Mike, thanks for all your great comments about SPOCC Social. I'll pass them on to Luke who set-up the site.

We've decided to make everybody we know in our LAs to be SPOCC Users to start with and to subscribe them to e-mail notifications for the forums (we checked this with the LAs). They can work out how to unsubscribe if they want to!

I'll ask Luke to contact you about your involvement. The more help for the LAs the better as far as we're concerned! We believe OCC should fade into the background and that the community should become self-sufficient. Perhaps this is the new Facebook ;-)
